The English School Section ONLINE
Welcome to the online portal for the English School of international relations, maintained by the English School Section of the International Studies Association (ISA).
The Section is a group of scholars within the field of International Relations (IR) who explore the relationship between international system, international society and world society. Their research asks big questions about how international order functions, how the current configuration of international system and society came to be, how change happens in world politics, and what the ethical basis of international relations is, or should be. The latter discussion often explores the tensions between power, order and justice.
Although the label ‘English School’ has stuck, the international society approach has always attracted scholars from across the globe. Recent research explores international and regional societies in the Global South, particularly in East Asia and South America, and Central Asia. It is also methodologically pluralist. Although a historical sensibility is often associated with the school, the section welcomes dialogue and innovative debates with researchers from across the political and methodological spectrum.
